Race Recap: The Leadville Trail Marathon

The Leadville Race Series currently operated by Life Time Fitness puts on the Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half along with several more running and cycling events every year (most famously known for the Leadville Trail 100 miler).

The marathon is in its sixteenth year and starts in the Historic Mining District located on the east side of Leadville—an area known for its mining heritage, beautiful scenery and exciting trails. Continue Reading →

Review: Summer Night Half Marathon

summernighttrailHMAfter the sun set, 500 runners sporting headlamps embarked on a journey through a heavily wooded park on their way to an amazing post-race spread.

Last August, I had to record my first — and to date only — DNS (did not start) for a race, due to an ITBS injury. The race was a half marathon on a trail in Eagle Creek Park, roughly 15 miles north of Indianapolis. (In 2011, Trail Runner Magazine named it the “Best Urban Based Trail Marathon” in the country.)

After healing, I made plans to avenge that setback by completing two trail races this year at the same park. That brings us to June 6 and the Summer Night Trail Marathon. Birthday Trail Run

IMG_20140520_125511_502Taking a trail run with your best friend is the coolest way to celebrate one’s birthday.

I turned 34 today (not sure what to make of it).

I wish I could say we ran 34 miles -one for each year of my life, but . . . since I’m only up to marathon distance, trying to go 34 miles would have taken the “happy” out of “happy birthday”.

So, we ran 3-4 miles instead.

It turns out the park was short on trails but it was abundant with beautiful vistas -especially for southern Illinois.

Life is short, go on adventures.

I Biffed It – Taking a Tumble While Running!

Not to happy about tripping over this!

Face it, if you run enough you are going to take a tumble.

If you run on trails the probability of falling goes up exponentially.

It happened to me for the first time about 4 days ago. I was speeding through a 5 mile trail run on a nice leafy path. During the final downhill section a root stub sticking out of ground about 2 inches caught my left foot. I immediately went horizontal.
