Congrats to our client Jason on running a well-paced marathon with negative splits! He writes,
“As you know, MTA Coach Antonio got me through my first marathon in NYC last year on just 7 months of training. It was a great experience, though I definitely struggled on the back half.
This year I ran my second marathon, the Wineglass, three days after my 50th birthday, and it couldn’t have gone better. After a year and a half of training with Antonio, I felt in control the entire race. We set a race strategy together and hoped I’d break 4 hours. I came in at 3:46, a PR by over 30 minutes (ran 4:17 at NYC last year in my 1st marathon).
On the drive down I put on the MTA podcast “Trust Your Training, Go the Distance,” and the timing was perfect. My long runs 3 to 6 weeks out had felt strong, but like most marathoners I hadn’t gone long in a few weeks, so I was trying to remember how those runs felt. As the podcast mentioned, training usually tops out at 20 to 21 miles, and I’d only run 26.2 once before. I felt stronger this year, but in the days leading up to the race some doubts started creeping in.
I didn’t know how it would go past mile 20, whether I could finish strong, or if I’d actually break 4 hours. The podcast gave me the confidence I needed. I executed our plan, stayed controlled through the first half, then ran big negative splits on the back half once I felt good enough to push and stayed consistent pushing right through the finish!
Huge thanks to MTA and Coach Antonio. Less than 18 months ago I signed up for my first marathon, and yesterday, three days after turning 50, I ran a 3:46. It definitely wouldn’t have been possible without Coach Antonio & MTA!!
Now it’s time to plan ahead for next year’s marathon!” -Jason Goetz
