A podcast for running with dogs would be great! I run between 20-25 miles/week with my 4 year old Goldendoodle named Truman and he is just like Erin described. He knows when it’s time to run. He doesn’t care how far, fast or where we run…he just loves to run. We have been running together since June of 2022 and are approaching 2,000 miles and have ran 12 races. Truman keeps me motivated to run and I miss him on Wednesday’s when I run solo. We even use the water bottle that Erin described.
I would love to provide tips on running with dogs if you need material for your dog running podcast.
Hello MTA! I’ve only been listening for a short time but I thoroughly enjoy the podcast! I haven’t run a marathon yet, but I’m very slowly working up to it, aiming for next year. I love that this is such a positive community and it has been really motivating for me. I’ve even gotten a pair of inline skates after listening to your episode on skating the Berlin marathon – I had no idea that was an option! It really brought me back to my younger days! This episode really spoke to me because I’ve recently found the sport of canicross, which is essentially cross country running with your dog. You could tell how much Coach Erin enjoys it, and I totally share her sentiment! I’m sure you may have heard of it, but I feel like it would have been remiss of me to not reach out. I have done a lot of dog training over the years and I had no idea this was a thing, so if I can introduce even one more person to it that would be amazing!
I feel like so many people do this already, but there is an official sport for it. North American Canicross (NACC) has been so helpful! They’re a great organization and have been such a huge help to us that I wanted to let other people know about it. I’ll put the link in this reply, and I highly recommend anyone reach out to them! NACC has been so welcoming and informative that I’m now completely addicted for life with this sport. Since I have discovered this my dog has completely changed. He’s a rescue, not socialized, reactive and a herding breed so I wasn’t sure how he would do. I was so amazed at how much he loves it, and he’s great at it! It completely changed our lives. When he’s canicrossing he knows what we’re doing, he’s confident, he’s having so much fun! So I can attest to the fact that any dog is able to enjoy it. I just get the gear out and he gets so excited, which is pretty much the only reason some days that I get out the door. As for myself, for the past 6 years I have tried and failed multiple times to get back into running. Now that I have canicross goals to train for I’m actually getting the miles in. Even when I don’t bring him, I go out and run so that I can improve, because I know he’s always ready for the next one. And I feel so great! I am not fast, but that’s OK because I always have a training partner that appreciates me regardless of that fact. NACC also lists local meet ups all over North America with their ambassadors, so no matter where you’re training there’s probably others near you that enjoy running and love their dogs. I’m in Delaware, so please reach out! I would love to see everyone at the next canicross social meet up! And definitely check out the NACC website!
