About the Athens Marathon

The Authentic Athens Marathon is an annual race held in Athens, following the historic route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic Games were held in 1896. This route commemorates the legendary feat of the marathon runner Pheidippides, who, according to tradition, ran from Marathon to Athens in 490 BC to announce the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon, before collapsing and dying of exhaustion.

The modern form of the marathon was introduced at the first Olympic Games in 1896, with the course starting from Marathon and ending at the Panathenaic Stadium. This course is considered the authentic one and is a challenge for runners due to its uphill sections, especially between the 10th and 31st kilometers.

Today, the Authentic Athens Marathon attracts thousands of runners from 152 countries, offering them the opportunity to run a course steeped in history and cultural significance, finishing at the iconic Panathenaic Stadium, which is not only an architectural marvel, but a living symbol of Greece’s athletic and cultural heritage.

The Athens Marathon has a cut-off time of 8 hours
