In this episode we speak with Phil Shin, a listener to the podcast who’s been battling liver cancer while continuing to train for marathons and inspire others.

Interview with Phil Shin

We met Phil at the MTA Meet Up just before the 2019 London Marathon. Phil was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2018 and had a racquetball-sized tumor removed. Phil says that running kept him sane during this time. After surgery he managed to run a marathon six months later and qualify for Boston.

When we met him a year later his cancer had returned and he was waiting for a liver donor. Thankfully a donor stepped forward, who happened to be an old friend. They both recovered from their surgeries and were able to form a team to run the 2020 LA Marathon. The team was able to raise over $10,000 for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation. https://www.bravelikegabe.org/

Phil works in IT and lives with his wife and son in California. One of his mantras is #runningonhope You can’t help but be inspired by hearing Phil’s story!
